The CEO of Korean Air is firing his own daughters after a pair of embarrassing scandals.

 

대한항공 회장은 당혹스러운 두 번의 스캔들이 발생 한 후 자신의 두 딸을 해고하고 있다.

 

The two women will be removed from their executive positions and stripped of management responsibilities, said Cho Yang-ho, who is also the company's chairman.

 

두 여성은 임원직에서 물러났으며 경영 책임에서 제외되었다고 조양호 대한항공의 회장이 발표했다.

 

"As chairman of Korean Air and as the head of my family, I feel miserable by the immature behavior of my daughters," Cho said in a statement Sunday. "I apologize to all Koreans."

 

조 회장은 일요일 성명서에서 “대한항공의 회장으로서 가장으로서 딸들의 성숙하지 못한 행동에 비참함을 느낍니다”라고 말하며, “모든 한국 국민들에게 사죄합니다”라고 했다.

 

One of the women, Heather Cho, became the focus of international outrage four years ago during the 'nut rage' scandal when she abused cabin crew staff over how she was served macadamia nuts on a Korean Air flight.

 

딸 중의 한 명인 히더 조(조현아)는 대항항공 비행기에서 마카다미아 넛을 받는 방식을 가지고 항공기 객실 승무원에게 행패를 부릴 4년 전 ‘땅콩 분노’ 스캔들로 국제적인 분노의 핵심 인물이 되었다.

 

But it was her sister, Emily Cho, who triggered public anger more recently after reports emerged that she insulted an advertising executive and threw water in his face last month. She has apologized, saying what she did was "foolish." But labor unions demanded she step down as senior vice president and face punishment.

 

그러나 지난 달 광고 대행사 임원에게 모욕적인 언사를 하고 그의 얼굴에 물을 뿌린 사실이 보도된 후 가장 최근에 대중적 분노를 촉발시킨 인물은 조현아의 여동생 에밀리 조였다. 그녀는 “바보 같은 짓을 했다”고 말하며 사과를 했지만 노조는 부사장직에서 물러나고 죄값을 받아야 한다고 요구했다.

 

The water scandal reignited frustration in South Korea with family-run conglomerates, known as "chaebol." Many South Koreans are tired of what they see as corrupt and entitled behavior by rich chaebol members, especially the second- or third-generation children of the company founders.

 

물 스캔들은 한국에서 '재벌'이라고 불리는 가족 운영 대기업들로 인한 좌절감을 불러일으켰다. 많은 한국인들은 특히 기업 창업주의 2-3세대 자식들의 부자 재벌 구성원들에 의한 부패하고 권리가 부여된 행동으로 보는 것에 지쳐 있다.

 

The Cho sisters are third generation members of the family behind Korean Air and its web of affiliated companies.

 

조 씨 자매는 대한항공과 대한항공의 제휴기업들 뒤에 있는 조씨 일가의 3세대 가족이다.

 

Heather Cho served five months of a one-year prison sentence over the 2014 'nut rage' incident after a Korean court found her guilty of violating aviation law. She had demanded a Korean Air plane return to its gate at Kennedy International Airport in New York so a flight attendant could be removed for serving the nuts in a bag instead of a porcelain bowl.

 

히더 조(조현아)는 한국 법원이 항공법 위반으로 유죄를 선고 한 후, 2014년 '땅콩 분노' 사건으로 징역 1년 중 5개월 수감생활을 했다. 그녀는 한 항공기를 뉴욕의 케네디 국제공항에 있는 게이트로 돌아가도록 지시해서 비행 승무원이 그 견과류를 도자기 그릇 대신 봉지에 담긴 그대로 제공했다는 이유로 내릴 수 밖에 없었다.

 

Korean Air said she was resigning from her executive positions at the time of the scandal. But she recently returned as president of the airline's hotel network.

 

대한항공은 그 당시 스캔들로 조현아가 맡았던 임원직에서 사퇴한다고 밝혔다. 그러나 그녀는 최근 대한항공의 호텔 네트워크의 사장으로 복귀했다.

 

Now, her sister's scandal appears to have brought her comeback to an abrupt end.

 

현재 조현아의 여동생의 스캔들로 인해 그녀의 복직이 갑작스럽게 막을 내렸다.

The drama at Korean Air is the just the latest turmoil at South Korea's chaebol. The sprawling, multinational empires account for a big chunk of South Korea's economy and have a long history of top executives who suffer limited consequences for wrongdoing.

 

대한항공의 이야기는 한국의 재벌에 대한 가장 최근의 벌어진 소동이다. 제멋대로 뻗어나가는 다국적 제국들은 한국 경제의 큰 덩어리를 차지하고 있으며 잘못된 행동에 대해 작은 한정된 결과를 겪는 최고 경영자들의 오랜 역사를 가지고 있다.

 

Last year, a massive political corruption scandal engulfed Samsung, Hanjin Group, the parent company of Korean Air, and other giant conglomerates.

 

지난 해에 대형 정치부패 스캔들이 삼성과 대한항공의 모기업인 한진그룹 및 다른 거대 대기업들을 휩쓸었다.

 

In February, Lee Jae-yong, the de facto leader of the huge Samsung business empire, walked free after his prison sentence was suspended. Lee had been found guilty of bribery and other corruption charges related to the scandal. He had been sentenced to five years in prison.

 

2월에는 거대 삼성 기업 제국의 사실상의 회장인 이재용 씨가 그의 형이 집행정지된 후 석방되었다. 이 씨는 그 스캔들과 관련된 뇌물과 다른 부패혐의로 유죄를 받았다. 그는 5년 징역형을 받았었다.
