Kim Jong-un’s wife Ri Sol-ju may accompany the North Korean leader to his first summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in later this month, in a sign of her growing role as a key player in the regime’s international diplomacy.

 

김정은의 부인 리설주가 북한 정권의 국제외교에 있어 주요 요인으로서의 커지는 자신의 역할을 보여주는 표시로 이번 달 말 한국 문재인 대통령과의 첫 번째 정상회담에 김정은과 함께 동행할 수도 있다.

 

With just three weeks to go before the landmark meeting of the two Korean leaders on the heavily militarised border, the South’s press is speculating that Ms Ri will share high tea with their own first lady, Kim Jung-sook, as well as attending a state lunch or dinner.

 

중무장한 국경에서 남북한 지도자들의 역사적인 정상회담이 단 3주 앞으로 다가오면서 한국의 언론은 리설주 여사가 문재인 대통령 주최 점심이나 만찬에 참석할 뿐만 아니라 김정숙 영부인과 다과를 함께할 것으로 추측하고 있다.

 

If confirmed, the occasion would be another significant step in the rapid rise of Ms Ri, alongside Mr Kim’s younger sister Kim Yo-jong, in presenting the softer side of the regime in an ongoing charm offensive with Seoul.

 

만일 확인된다면 그 기회는 남한에 지속적 매력 공세로 북한 정권의 보다 부드러운 모습을 보여 주려는 김 위원장의 여동생 김여정에 이은 리설주 여사의 급부상이라는 또 하나의 중요한 의미를 지니는 단계가 될 것이다.

 

Believed to be 28, she reportedly married Mr Kim in 2009, but their union was only made public in 2012, and the young wife remained largely behind the scenes until last year, during which time she may, or may not, have given birth to three children.

 

리설주는 28세인 것으로 알려졌지만 보도에 의하면 2009년에 김 위원장과 결혼했다, 그러나 2012년에 대중에 그들 가족이 공개되었을 뿐 그 젊은 아내는 작년까지 장막에 가려져 있었다. 그 기간 동안 리설주는 3명의 아이를 출산했을 수도 있고 안 했을 수도 있다.

 

The existence of one baby daughter was confirmed by former US basketball star Dennis Rodman in March 2013.

김정은과 리설주가 무장된 열차에서 리무진을 타고 베이징 중심까지 빠르게 이동했다.

 

Very little is known about Ms Ri’s background.  She reportedly comes from an elite Pyongyang family and was once a cheerleader in the squad that took this year’s Winter Olympics by storm – in her case during the 2005 Asian Athletics Championships.

 

리설주의 배경에 대해서는 알려진 것이 거의 없다. 알려진 바에 의하면 리설주는 북한의 엘리트 가문 출신이며 한 때는 2005년 아시아 육상 선수권 대회에서 올해의 동계 올림픽을 사로잡은 바로 그 응원단의 단원이었다.

 

She may also be a science graduate and a former singer in the popular Unhasu Orchestra. Kenji Fujimoto, former personal sushi chef to Mr Kim’s father, Kim Jong-il, described her to CNN in 2012 as “charming”, with a voice that was “so soft.”

 

리설주는 과학대학 졸업생이자 유명한 은하수 오케스트라의 전 가수이기도 하다. 김 위원장의 아버지 김정일의 전 개인 스시 주방장이었던 후지모토 겐지 씨는 2012년 CNN과의 인터뷰에서 리설주를 “아주 부드러운” 목소리를 지니고 있으며 “매력적”이라고 설명했다.

 

It was only late last year that the mysterious Ms Ri began to emerge as a public persona in the secretive regime, appearing alongside her husband on PR offensives to Pyongyang factories.

 

신비에 쌓인 리설주는 비밀스런 정권에서 대중적 인물로 등장하기 시작한 것은 지난해 말이었으며 남편과 나란히 평양 공장에 대한 홍보 선전전에 등장했다.

 

But it was her attendance at a political strategy dinner between Kim Jong-un and high level South Korean envoys in early March that sealed her growing role in international matters.

 

그러나 국제 문제에서 점점 커지는 그녀의 역할을 입증한 것은 3월 초 김정은과 한국의 고위급 특사들 사이의 정치적 전략의 만찬 참석이었다.

 

An amiable Ms Ri is said to have eased the atmosphere at the wine-fuelled meeting that set the path for keynote future summits first between Mr Kim and Mr Moon, and later with US President Donald Trump.

 

쾌활하고 정감 있는 리설주는 먼저 김 위원장과 문 대통령 간, 그리고 나중에 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과의 앞으로 있을 주요 정상회담을 위한 길을 만든 만찬 자리에서 분위기를 편하게 해주었다고 한다.

리설주는 베이징 방문 중 중국 시진핑 주석과 그의 부인을 만났다.

 

When South Korean national security chief, Chung Eui-yong, told Mr Kim he should quit smoking for health reasons, an amused Ms Ri dispelled any awkwardness by clapping her hands and saying that she agreed, reported the Chosun Ilbo.

 

정의용 한국 국가안보실장이 김 위원장께서 건강을 위해 담배를 끊어야 한다고 전했을 때 즐거워한 리설주가 맞다며 자신도 동의한다고 말함으로써 단숨에 어색함을 날려버렸다고 조선일보는 보도했다.

 

Stylish and smiling, she also joined him last month on the state’s bulletproof green train to Beijing, on Mr Kim’s debut overseas trip since rising to power in 2011. In doing so, she broke new ground as a North Korean First Lady abroad, on an equal footing with her husband.

 

멋지고 미소를 짓는 그녀는 또한 2011년 집권한 후, 지난 달 김 위원장의 첫 베이징 해외순방에 방탄 녹색 열차를 타고 그와 함께 동행했다. 그렇게 함으로써, 리설주는 남편과 동등한 입장에서, 북한의 영부인으로서 해외에서 새로운 지평을 열었다.

 

The staged photoshoots from the trip, along with shots of the pair enjoying a K-pop concert of South Korean musicians in Pyongyang last week, form part of growing efforts by the regime to show the world an image of a modern, and normal, young married couple.
